Day 12: We were relieved in the morning to find that Mary had come back to the room, around 2 AM she said, and she had not lost her shirt. We were thinking about staying another day but we did not have a reservation and would have had to change rooms. So we checked out of Circus Circus and went and ate the breakfast buffet at the Hilton. It was much better.
Then we went through the Star Trek Experience. That was neat. There was a museum with many items from the shows, and there is a fun simulation ride that we did a couple of times. Then we looked through the shops on the promenade at Deep Space Nine. There were three Klingons roaming the station, and I had fun insulting them. They were very good sports, for Klingons.
That was it for Vegas. We departed and headed south on I-15 back towards LA. I surprised everyone a couple of hours into the drive by getting off at this exit in the middle of nowhere. I started going down this dirt road in the desert. Everyone was really enjoying it, commenting on how they would never forget this part of the trip. After only 4 miles, though, we reach the destination I was looking for. It was this mineral spring which used to be a resort called Zzyzx. It was interesting but I did not take any pictures.
We got back on I-15 and continued on to Calico, which is just north of Barstow. It was supposed to be a ghost town. Tourist trap is more like it. It was mostly shops with a few attractions, all of which cost $ separately. It was a silver mining boom town in the 1890s and 1900s, so there were some things to take pictures of, though. We drove about an hour further south and spent the night in Victorville.
